Romney Leads In Poll

quote:

Romney leads Paul in new Des Moines Register Iowa Poll; Santorum surges

The Des Moines Register’s latest Iowa Poll shows a surprise three-way match-up in contention to win the Iowa Republican caucuses: Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.

Santorum, who has been largely invisible in the polls throughout the campaign season, is now beating the other evangelical choices and has a clear shot at victory Tuesday night.

But political analysts note there’s little time for Santorum to cash in and regroup before New Hampshire, where voters weigh in nine days from now, while Romney is positioned to replicate what he’s done in Iowa in all the early states.

In four days of polling, Romney leads at 24 percent, Paul has 22 percent and Rick Santorum, 15 percent.

G P Candidates Await Iowa Verdict
quote:

Their fate hinging on the enthusiasm of their supporters, the Republican presidential candidates prepared Tuesday for Iowa to deliver the first official reckoning in the 2012 contest after a day of sharp-elbowed politicking.

Newt Gingrich, fed up with the negative ads against him, called Mitt Romney a liar. Rick Santorum, similarly dispirited about a spate of robo-calls in Iowa, called Ron Paul "disgusting."

The exchanges were characteristic of the bitter tone that has pervaded the closing moments of one of history's most volatile GOP elections. With more than 40 percent of Iowans supposedly uncommitted to a candidate as of this past weekend, the campaigns approach Tuesday night's caucuses with little certainty of the outcome.

Here you go before Fox & Drudge

CNN has blogged: 8:42 p.m. ET - Four years ago, Republican caucus-goers were looking for a candidate they could believe in: 45% said their top priority was a candidate who shared their values. Just 7% said electability was their main concern.

According to CNN entrance polling this time around, that last-place factor is the biggest motivator for caucus-goers: 32% tonight said the most important quality in a candidate was the ability to beat President Obama this fall. But they haven't completely abandoned purity for pragmatism: 24% said their biggest priority was picking a true conservative.

8:39 p.m. ET – CNN entrance polling showed a breakdown of Evangelical voters, who make up a large voting bloc in Iowa. Paul received the most support, according to the early results, with 23% followed by Santorum with 21% and Romney with 16%.

Meanwhile @ Hotair: Update: The entrance poll has it Paul 24, Romney 24, Santorum 18, but Huckabee ended up far outperforming his entrance-poll numbers on caucus night 2008. More from the Hill:

As expected, Paul polled best with younger voters, garnering more than half of the support of voters under 29 and a plurality of those aged 30-44. Romney, meanwhile, led the field among voters over 45.

Paul also led with nearly four-in-ten voters who had never before attended a GOP caucus, while Romney earned the vote of nearly three-in-ten previous caucusgoers. The 71 percent of those surveyed who called themselves Republicans broke more for Romney than any other candidate, while almost half of self-described Independent voters went for Paul.

Santorum, meanwhile, earned more than a quarter of those who self-identified as very conservative, and led among voters who said they “strongly support” the Tea Party. Moderates and liberals were most likely to vote for Paul.

According to Zach Wolf of ABC, fully six in 10 Ron Paul supporters don’t identify as Republican. He’s apparently cleaning up among independents, as expected — and they’re turning out in higher than usual numbers.

Again the cable news channels are behind on the data that you are getting here....

Hotair is saying: Update: At 9:39 ET, with almost a third of all precincts reporting, Gingrich leads Perry by slightly more than a thousand votes. That doesn’t sound like much in the abstract, but remember that this is a small pool of voters; right now, Romney leads with a little over 7,800 votes total. Starting to look like Newt will be fourth place, which means Perry’s on life support.
