VIDEO: Romney put on defense at South Carolina debate, as GOP rivals fight for edge in state primary
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mitt Romney was put on defense out of the box at Monday night's Republican presidential primary debate -- answering questions about his record at private venture firm, Bain Capital; distancing himself from super PAC ads against fellow candidates; defending his record as Massachusetts governor, and dodging demands that he release his tax records.
But Romney fired back against the onslaught, saying he is proud of his record in business and as governor.
"We were fortunate to have an unemployment rate by the time I left office of 4.7 percent. Sounds pretty good today," Romney said. "And I was also proud of the fact that we balanced the budget every year I was in office. We reduced taxes 19 times, put in place a rainy day fund of over $2 billion by the time I left."
Still, with his rivals running out of time to make the case they are a viable and "conservative" alternative to the front-runner, the attacks were fast and furious.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul says he will make deep cuts to the military budget even though many voters in South Carolina and elsewhere are employed by the military.
The Texas congressman was grilled Monday on his position on military spending during a nationally televised presidential debate. He has called for closing bases overseas and reducing spending on what he calls the military industrial complex.
Paul said he wants to protect military jobs domestically and insists there's a difference between military spending and a strong national defense.

Discussing the controversial topics of unemployment benefits and how best to help those at poverty level gain meaningful employment, thus, lifting them out of poverty, Newt Gingrich said that all unemployment benefits must be tied to a work-training program. He also pointed out that 99 weeks — the maximum time allotted for receiving those benefits — could amount to an Assciates Degree.
Gingrich also defended his “food stamp president” comment, asserting that no other president in America’s history has put more people on the government assisted food program.
“My Twitter has been inundated with people of all races asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the poor,” debate moderator Juan Williams began. He suggested that calling President Obama a “food stamp president” might sound, to some people, “as if you are seeking to belittle people.”

I think that I would of been right w/ him..after many years of dealing w/ street kids and homeless adults I have had to intervene in many hairy/dangerous situations. And, you're trained to do that. As a matter of fact it's hard to turn off. I've found myself on the job i.e. w/ others taking a gun off of a kid, chasing kids that pulled knives, breaking up fights was the norm, and dealing w/ violence was a regular part of the job. Off duty I've intervened in talking down a drunk that wanted to pull a gun in a bar, rescuing ambulance workers (of all people) w/ other pedestrians in an ambulance turned over in an accident, and my friends who also worked w/ me as supervisors & I naturally intervened in a man beating his wife or girlfriend, where the three of us separated them, and kept him from further attack...when the NYPD arrived they saw how we had the scene under control..and asked us "what precinct are you guys from?". Even today, although much older I am always ready as is a friend, or two to help out if we can...hope that you feel that way too.
