The GOP Field: The Weak Ahead

The GOP field: The week ahead
[Or as BB would say the WEAK ahead...]

Rick Santorum has campaigned harder than anyone in Iowa this year. So it’s not surprising that he’s the first Republican back on the Iowa trail after Christmas — with a pheasant hunt and press conference in Adel Monday.

After that event, though, most of the GOP 2012 field begins the final sprint toward the Jan. 3 caucuses, with no more debates to shift the narrative and all the ad time already bought up.

Mitt Romney will continue shoring up his New Hampshire firewall with two stops Tuesday — he’ll spend the morning in Londonderry and the afternoon in Portsmouth. Then he heads to Davenport that evening, hoping to pick off some Iowa support with a three-day bus tour that kicks off in eastern Iowa Wednesday morning.

Newt Gingrich visits his wife’s family in Wisconsin on Monday after spending Christmas Eve and Christmas morning at a Catholic basilica inside the Beltway. Then he is expected to begin a 44-city Iowa bus tour Tuesday in Dubuque. The campaign has not publicly released details about the stops, but they’ve made clear he’ll visit each of the Hawkeye state’s media markets.

GOOD NEWS of Great Joy !

Good news of great joy!

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Tanman & Republicrats Cave On Tax Bill!

Congress Approves Two-Month Tax Cut Extension, Tees Up Talks on Yearlong Package

Congress on Friday approved a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, averting a tax hike with a no-drama vote following a week of partisan deadlock.

The House and Senate, taking up the tax cut deal struck by party leaders the day before, each approved the package in a matter of minutes, sending it to the president's desk. The bill keeps the payroll tax rate at 4.2 percent, meaning a family making $50,000 would be spared an increase of roughly $40 per paycheck. The package also extends long-term unemployment insurance and prevents a deep cut in payments to doctors who see Medicare patients.

Under the terms of the agreement struck between House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, both chambers will next send negotiators to hammer out a yearlong package in early 2012.

—Prevents 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors; extends other health care fees through Feb. 29.

WASHINGTON – President Obama has signed a $1 trillion-plus 2012 spending bill that sets the day-to-day budgets of 10 Cabinet agencies.

The Senate approved the bill last Saturday in a flurry of year-end activity that was overshadowed by an ensuing confrontation over extending a payroll tax cut. The spending measure locks in cuts that conservative Republicans won from the White House and Democrats this year.
